Well done to Canterbury Athletics Club members Tallara Joseph-Riogi & Patrick McMahon on their achievements at the 2024 Australian All Schools Championships in Brisbane this weekend.
As the U15s national title holder and NSW state record-holder for the women’s javelin, all eyes were on Tallara.
First up though, was Shot Put in the morning. Tallara Joseph-Riogi picked up the🥈Silver, measuring in at 16.84m in the U16s Women’s event. In the afternoon, Tallara followed up by taking home the national 🥇Gold for javelin, measuring in at an impressive 49.80m.
Katherine O’Brien, Canterbury Athletics Club Juniors Vice President & Under 16s – 20s Age Manager said “We’re all so proud of you Tallara! Your hard work and dedication pays off once again. You’re such an inspiration for all the Canterbury athletes.”
After Tallara’s javelin Gold, athletic history was made with the U16 Men’s 200m sprint by QLD’s Gout Gout. Clocking in at 20.04, Gout Gout broke a long-standing Australian record held for 56 years.
The 200m sprint record was set by Peter Norman back in 1968 at the Mexico City Olympic games, where he claimed the Silver. Now an Iconic moment in Olympic history, Peter Norman took the podium alongside fellow medallists John Carlos and Tommie Smith during the Black Power salute, demonstrating his support by wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge.
Long-time Canterbury Athletics Club member Patrick McMahon took home🥈 Silver for the U15 Men’s 2000m Steeplechase with a time of 6:22.92 at the national event. Vice President Katherine O’Brien said “Congratulations Patrick! You’ve always been a star at Canterbury. You excel at every event you put your heart into. Such a champion.”
Recent Canterbury Athletics Club alumni Siena Mace came in third 🥉 in the U18s Women’s javelin measuring in at 42.13m.
Well done to our athletes who proudly represented their state at the Australian Schools Championships event.
On Sunday 10 November, Canterbury’s top 8-12s athletes took on the best in the state at the 2024 Valour State Relay Championships over at Sydney Olympic Park.
A huge day for all, parents and carers rallied in support of our kiddos who gave it their best. Most importantly, everyone had a brilliant time as the kids proudly donned the blue and white.
Team Canterbury, you did well.
- Well done to our Girls 8-12 Middle Distance relay team who came 7th of 30 teams (second image, top row)
- Congratulations to our 10s Girls 4 x 100m relay team who placed 6th of 32 teams
- Everyone had fun and should be super proud of their efforts
Canterbury Little Athletes were delighted recently to meet Olympian high jumper Brandon Starc and MasterChef alumni Courtney Roulston at Campbell Field – the home of Canterbury Athletics Club.
They appeared together on Sunrise on National Banana Day, in the 50th anniversary year of Canterbury Little Athletics.
This was in support of Coles’ Banana A-Peel. For every kilogram of Cavendish bananas sold between Wednesday 16 October to Tuesday 22 October, Coles, with the support of its Aussie banana growers, will donate 10 cents to Little Athletics Australia. Funds raised will go towards the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund to help grassroots clubs and centres purchase new sports equipment.
You can see the footage here.
Friday night competitions have begun, as we celebrate our 50th year of Canterbury Little Athletics.
Registered athletes should meet their Age Managers on Campbell Athletic Field at 5:55 pm on Fridays for a prompt 6:00pm start.
- General family and community members (not volunteering) must be at the stands from 6:00pm sharp to prevent delays to competitions.
- Age Managers will be wearing orange vests with children’s age group number on the back.
- Kids must sign in and out with their Age Managers. Please let your Age Manager know if you are taking your child, even for the bathroom.
- Volunteers should pick up a yellow vest on arrival. Tiny Tots should be accompanied by one (1) parent on the field, and should wear a blue vest which is available to pick up on the field where you meet.
- Age Group Helpers should introduce themselves to one of their Age Managers upon arrival for a briefing on what they’ll need your help with for the evening. Age Group volunteers and Tiny Tots should check-in via the QR code with their Age Managers. Field and hurdle set up volunteers should check-in via the QR code with our Acting President wearing the pink vest on the field.
- No bib, no compete. Use a couple of safety pins if you need to secure the bib to your child’s singlet.
- Furry friends should stay home Fridays please.
Several age groups are now full, with limited spaces still available for some age groups. See registration link.
Registrations are now open for the 2024-25 season!
There are some changes to registration this year, because of the alignment of Little Athletics and Athletics NSW which now streamlines membership costs and administration processes, while expanding competition opportunities.
When you register, even if you have been with Canterbury Athletics for a while, you might need to register as a new member. In summary:
- If your athlete was a dual member last year (you have a state ID number), you will be registering them as a returning member.
- If you don’t have a state ID number and have never been a dual member, you will need to register as a new member. (If you’re not sure, you can try searching for your athlete’s name and date of birth.)
- You may see some changes to the age groups – just follow the prompts, but if you want more info you can read this information which explains age groups under the new system.
The fee this year is $155 per athlete. If you are eligible for an active kids voucher, you’ll be able to use this during the registration process.
This year the duty bond fee of $150, has been incorporated into the registration fee. However each family only needs to pay this fee once, this means you will need to use a discount code for any 2nd, 3rd, 4th or more children. The code is:
Dutybond
The code will remove $150 from your registration fee each time it is used, it can be used multiple times in the one transaction. Please make sure that one duty bond is showing at the checkout. For example if you have two children, you will need to apply the code once, if you have 3 children you will need to apply the code twice and so on.
This fee will be refunded at the end of the season if you volunteer 8 times throughout the season.
Please make sure that you register all of your children at one time, because there are fees associated with this new platform, and registering once will minimise these fees.
Please note that the system will ask you for a birth certificate, you do not need to upload this document at the time of registration; you can bring it to the registration pick ups. If you have previously registered with Canterbury Athletics, you do not need to show your birth certificate.

There have been some problems with the new Athletics registration system, so we are going to hold off opening our registration until it’s resolved. Hopefully those problems can be ironed out quickly, and we will provide another update on Wednesday 7 August.
In the mean time – get some more Olympics viewing in!
Hi families,
Thanks to everyone who has registered with Canterbury Athletics this 2023-24 season.
If you’re interested in signing up, please note that tiny tots, under 7, under 8, under 9 and under 10 age groups are now closed.
We’re looking forward to a fun-filled athletic season!
Happy Mothers Day to all of our wonderful mum’s, thanks for all that you do!
A friendly reminder that our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place next Sunday, 21 May at 2.30pm. The venue is Canterbury Girls High School (School Hall), Church Street, Canterbury and everyone is welcome.
We will also hold a 2023/24 Season Planning Session immediately after the AGM. This will run for approximately 60-90 minutes.
For full details for the meeting, please refer to the original notice here: Notice of Canterbury Athletics Club AGM
Additional things to note:
1. Annual Report: You can view this here: Annual Report 2022-23. Huge thanks to Mandy Verdon for this report and the excellent presentation of it, and to all of the report’s contributors.
2. Committee/Age Manager Nominations: thanks to everyone who has submitted their nomination forms to continue in their positions for next season or to step into new roles. If you haven’t submitted yours yet, please find them at the following links and send them to Mel: secretary@clac.org.au.
3. Nominations for President: Since the original AGM notification was circulated, I have resigned from the role of President. My kids are no longer participating in athletics and as committed as I have been to this club, my priorities must now be elsewhere. Therefore, we do need someone to step up into this role for the next 12 months (initially) and at the moment, no one has expressed interest or commitment to take on this role. Please, please, please – we need a President for our club. There is a fantastic group of knowledgable and committed people across our various Committee roles, with many processes and resources already in place. Please urgently reach out via president@clac.org.au to discuss how you can help.
As you know, Canterbury Athletics Club is run by a volunteer committee who are elected at the AGM. Without our Committee members, our kids won’t have a local club to participate with and for this, we say thanks to you all for your time, enthusiasm and efforts to deliver a positive experience for our members.
We look forward to seeing you at the AGM next Sunday.
Amy Winters
Canterbury Athletics Club President
